The Richland County Veterans Service Commission, formerly the Soldiers Relief Commission, has been part of the Ohio Revised Code since the Civil War. We are not part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, but a county office created by the Ohio Revised Code Title 59. All 88 counties in Ohio have a Veterans Service Commission.
The Service Department has four Service Officers, certified and trained by the Ohio Department of Veterans Services. These officers serve as a link between the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the veterans and their families, assisting them to apply for any benefits to which they may be entitled. These services are provided without charge, and the officer shall not be liable for any errors of omissions or commission that may possibly occur. This department services all veterans regardless of residence.
All veterans should bring their DD214 to our office for record purposes. If you do not have your discharge papers, our Service Officers can help you apply for a certified copy, and record it in the Richland County Recorders Office, so you will never have to worry about getting one again.
This office provides for veterans transportation Monday thru Thursday to the Cleveland VA Medical Center and the Parma CBOC. Transportation is also provided to the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky as necessary. Riders must schedule by calling the office.
We have a beautiful section in Mansfield Cemetery created to honor our veterans. This was designed for any honorably discharged veteran and their spouse for a minimal cost, or free of charge if the family does not have the financial means. Included is the lot (which is in sequential order by date of death), one headstone, flag holder footer, and headstone footer. Lots are purchased through our office only, so please stop in or call for information.
This office has direct temporary emergency financial aid for Richland County veterans and their dependents who have met with an unexpected hardship as a result of sickness, injury or disease, lack of employment, or unable to find adequate employment. Of primary importance are the basic necessities of life, such as food and shelter. It is our purpose to assist veterans and their dependents temporarily until a permanent solution to their difficulties can be arranged.
