The Richland County Sheriff’s Mounted Unit is under the command of Sheriff J. Steve Sheldon. This Special Deputy Auxiliary Unit was re-established in 1990, and consists of men and women who not only volunteer their time, but also supply their own mounts, equipment, and uniforms.
The Mounted Unit rides in many parades and performs patrol for special events, including Inkcarceration, the Richland County Fair, and Heritage Days at Malabar Farm. Business meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of most months throughout the year.
All of the members and their horses participate in special training sessions conducted by the Buckeye State Mounted Deputies Patrol. Training sessions include Tactical Formations, Crowd Control, Search and Rescue, and Obstacle Desensitization. The unit is self-supporting and operates on fundraisers and donations received for working special events. Funds received are used to purchase tack, equipment, training, and some uniforms.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Mounted Unit would like to extend an invitation to anyone who may be interested in joining the unit. Membership requirements include horsemanship experience and ability; access to a safe and reliable horse; transportation for the member and horse; and the ability to pass a background check. Richland County residency is NOT required. Applications for membership may be obtained by contacting:
